Défi Wordreference

Wordreference.com is the best website to help us learn French. It is easy to use and completely free. Complete the following activities today to become acquainted with how it works. Write your answers on the sheet provided.

Go to www.wordreference.com . Make sure the language is set to English-French from the drop down menu. Look up the word book.

1. How do you say book as in "reserve a place"? Look at the different entries to find your answer. It is on the page of the definition of book.

2. How do you say book as in "booked by the police"? Look at the different entries to find your answer. It is still on the page with book.


3. Still on the page that has the definition of book, use the find function on the browser by clicking "ctrl f"In the small box that appears on the top left corner of the screen type in "part of a". How do you say "The last book of the novel is very exciting." (the answer is right there).


4. Type in the same phrase  "The last book of the novel was very exciting." in google translate. http://translate.google.com/#en/fr/ Write what it gives you.

5. http://www.wordreference.com/fr/Abbreviations-French.aspx Go to the following link and write the abbbreviations for the following in the chart on your sheet:

nom masculin

nom féminin

verbe intransitif

verbe transitif

participe passé

adverbe

adjectif

Don't forget! Abbreviations are the short forms for big words. 
Example: Disc Jockey= DJ


6. Look up apple. How do you say apple as an adjective?

7. How do you say apple as in "the apple of one's eye"?

8. What does prunelle mean in english (hint it's not apple)?

9. Set the dictionary to French-English. Look up the word tomber. What does it mean.

10. What does "laisse tomber" mean. Use the ctrl f function to help.

11. Still on tomber, click on conjugator. It is towards the top of the page beside "en espanol". When you get to the page with the conjugations of the verb tomber, write down the verb tenses that you recognise.




12. Now look up the conjuguation of faire. Is it a regular or irregular verb?

13. Write down the conjuguation of faire in the present tense and the passé composé. Both can be found on the conjugation page.

14. Go back to the home page, set it to English-French. Look up to want. Find the the french verb, click on it and then get the conjugation of it using conjuguator. Write down the present tense of it.

15. Look up the french word tournage. Which phrase is correct:
            Il tournage une pistole.
            Le tournage de Harry Potter a eu lieu en Angleterre.


15. Finally look up the word awesome. Write "Wordreference is awesome" in French.
